Getting ready…

Sometimes you have to relocate quickly, and if so, you do what you gotta do.  And if this is you, you should be reading Preparing to sell…

But more often than not, the decision of when to sell a home is controlled by the owner.  The time between thinking about a new home, and actually making the decision to start the process to owning a new home is “Getting ready.”  It’s when you weigh all the pros and cons, take a good look at finances, consider all other options, and consider timing.

While I get paid for completing transactions, more often than not, I talk the customers who come to me during this period out of selling their home, or at least delaying it for another year or so.  The frictional costs involved in selling one home and buying another are great, and many times we find ourselves so caught up trying to keep up with the Jones’ that we lose sight of what is best for us.  I truly enjoy engaging in a discussion as to why someone feels the need to sell a home.  It helps me understand what is important to them, and in turn, helps me do a better job assisting them.

When you are “getting ready” you need to figure out what makes sense, and plan accordingly.  If you are considering downsizing, paring down some of your possessions, or researching storage options should be on your agenda.  If you are considering trading up, a list of wants, likes, and needs should be prepared.  Neighborhoods, schools, commutes, taxes, politics, housing style (did someone say duplex?) and any other demographic of importance to you should be examined.  And a good Realtor can and will help you during this period, with no obligation.
